Somalia Reeling Under the Worst Drought and Civil War

Somalia is currently crippling under one of the worst situations ever faced by the East African country. Around half-a-million people living in the country are suffering from the worst drought witnessed in the nation.

According to an international aid agency, Oxfam, the current civil war and the drought have resulted in people enduring immense hardships. Somalis at this point of time are willing to do anything for a grain of food and are finding it more and more difficult day by day to cope with the adverse situation.

Talking about the prevailing conditions in the country, the Program Officer for Oxfam, Zachariah Imeje, informed that people were desperate for food and the hunger had led them to flee the security of their villages to reach Mogadishu for food. They are ready to face gunfire and shelling to feed their stomachs.

Oxfam has called upon the international community to intervene and help people facing the horrendous conditions. The hungry people should be like a wake-up call for developed nations to lend a helping hand to the dying people.

The worst off are the central and southern regions of the nation, which have only received 0 to 15% of the usual rainfall this time around. Acute malnourishment has currently affected 25% people living in the Gedo region of the country.
