According to sources ‘in the know’ of the proceedings at chip giant Intel, the company is set to launch several tablets based on the MeeGo 1.2 version in June this year.
Earlier, a MeeGo-based tablet prototype, featuring a WiMAX radio for 4G broadband, was demonstrated by Intel in June 2010. The demo chiefly highlighted the multitasking capabilities of the OS; and its capability of running multiple applications simultaneously, and allowing up to five users to play a game at the same time.
Going by a recent Fudzilla report, Intel has supposedly disclosed limited information about MeeGo 1.2 to a number of developers, and has invited them to a preview of the MeeGo platform. In case the details are accurate, the timing will probably coincide with Asia’s biggest computer tradeshow - the Computex expo in Taipei.
Most of the developers – who are currently working with a reference design based on single-core Oak Trail chipsets - will likely launch final hardware in the third quarter this year. However, a few systems based on Windows 7 could probably show up as early as March.
While MeeGo has thus far not been offered by any tablet or netbook maker, Intel has been making heavy investments in development of platform which essentially is a lightweight Linux OS for tablets, smartphones and embedded devices.
At present, Meego is in version 1.1; and, as per the MeeGo roadmap, version 1.2 scheduled for release between April 21 and April 27, 2011.
