White Space Soon to be Opened

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reportedly permitted some 9 Companies to manage and administrate the white space wireless spectrum. This spectrum was reportedly an unused one before and only acted as a buffer between TV and channels. However as we have made a transition towards digital TV, this buffer space has lost its significance.

This move to open up the ‘white space’, wireless spectrum will most likely lead to the development of next-generation Wi-Fi.

The FCC in its order said “While the operation of multiple database administrators may present some coordination challenges, we find it is in the public interest to have multiple parties developing business models for this new mechanism”.

It further said that as the commission was also intending to employ some similar database approaches in other spectrum bands, the value of the exercise happened to extend beyond databases for the TV bands.

Also the white space spectrum has a considerably longer wavelength, wider penetration and a better reach. This is why some very popular Companies like Google are trying to turn the white space spectrum into the form of ‘super Wi-Fi’.

Google, Comsearch, Frequency Finder, KB Enterprises, LS Telecom, Key Bridge, Neustar, Spectrum Bridge, Telcordia Technology and WSdb are some of the Companies who have been granted the permission to access, build and manage databases of white spectrum.
