Garmin Introduces Navigation app for the iPhone

You can now purchase the StreetPilot for iPhone from any App Store for $40. This navigation application has been created by Garmin for the iPhone.

When the iPhone version is compared to another Garmin hardware GPS navigator, the Nuvi 1690, it is found that this attempt by Garmin to translate the excellent user interface and responsiveness of its hardware navigation units to the iPhone has been successful.

The best part about the software is that the maps are continuously updated. In these maps while some parts of the map software reside on the iPhone’s hard drive, most of them are downloaded via the 3G network.

However there is a little problem, since if once happens to stray outside AT&T’s 3G network; the map would not be visible until you get near a 3G tower. This problem has though not been confirmed yet.

Extensive points of interest such as gas stations and restaurants, helpful lane assist capabilities, and spoken street names all have been a part of the software.

Most of the features you’ll get on Garmin hardware units are there in the software, including extensive points of interest such as gas stations and restaurants, helpful lane assist capabilities, and spoken street names.
