People residing in Winnipeg, especially in the downtown and Point Douglas areas of the city have been warned about the outbreak of a recent infection. In order to resolve this very problem, an immunization program has been launched by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
According to a statement released by the WRHA, people in the highest risk groups will be provided free vaccines against the virus, which is a type of a pneumococcal disease. People found to be more prone to the virus have stated to be the elderly, homeless or those suffering from underlying ailments.
It needs to be kept in mind that the highest numbers of cases were reported last year, when the total number of cases had touched an astounding 98. In comparison previous years had only witnessed an average of 55-cases per year.
The WRHA has already issued a public advisory, which has warned that the condition is serious and potentially invasive. It can also prove to be fatal in some cases.
Clinics will be held to increase inoculations in the month of February and March. Nurses with the public health services will be making visits to soup kitchens and public shelters in order to ensure that high risk groups have been immunized against the dreaded infection.
