The Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates has funded $100 million to fight against polio. At the last week’s World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, he has given an addition $100 million to a global effort. He has joined this to wipe out wild poliovirus by the end of the next year.
Polio has affected hundreds and thousands of people. The infections around the world had caused 350,000 in 1988. It has decreased fewer than 1,500 last year.
There has been complete recovery with polio completely. However, in case the infection spread to spinal cord and brain, it can cause complete or partial paralysis. This disease makes a person disable. It is not a killer disease.
There are four countries where polio is still considered as endemic. These countries are India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Polio eradication drives should be continued in these countries.
"As long as it's in those four countries, it will get out and we'll have outbreaks", Gates said during his televised speech at Davos. "We had one in Tajikistan in the beginning of the year. We had one in Congo that started in the second half of the year. So we need to take these next few years and intensify the campaign".
