The most recent release of WikiLeaks related to Egypt or MENA is strong reaction to increasing Mubarek protests. In November 2008, an out of ordinary information was revealed by the cable, which reported that in 2007, the State Department had a talk with YouTube in order to transcribe the videos posted by Egyptian bloggers which showed abuses in Egypt. The cable is an indication to the State Government to take effective step by contacting a person named Pablo at Google so that Google can re-establish its contact to an Egyptian blogger who had lodged a complaint about deleted videos and access a few days back.
The reason behind deletion of video content is not clear; it could be taken as an Egyptian Government’s request in order to comply with YouTube’s Service. Some reasons could be video of policemen sodomizing a bus driver and a woman being mistreated and someone being shot. Such videos could also have been inflicted with the TOS violation charge.
Infact, in 2007, Google agreed to reinstate the deleted video content, which somehow indicated the exclusion of TOS violation charge that acts as a witness in cases related to human rights.
American Internet Companies have been contacted by State Government in regard to restoration of services during political havoc, especially in case of issues like Iran election protests. Even a minor attempt to negotiate on behalf of democracy is worth praising because at that time Egypt was a major non-NATO partner to the United States.
