Further extension on the cigarette lighting ban sparked outcry in New York as Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the imposition of prohibition on parks, beaches and even plazas, including Times Square.
In bid to promote healthier lifestyle among New Yorkers, the government decided to spread the ban to these places, as it was strongly felt that the people who get to these places for fresh air must get what they look for.
The smokers after the ban on smoking in restaurants and bars have been strictly asked not to light up the cancerous agent, failing which, they may face a fine of up to $100.
Mayor said in a press conference that after the successful implementation of ban in bars and eat-out places in 2003, the government has decided to help smokers to bid adieu to their smoking addictions.
It is learnt that since the ban of 2003, the average life of a New Yorker has ascended to 19 months, and the aid from government also helped no less than 350,000 people to kick the habit of smoking.
However, everyone was not happy. Rights group for smokers said that the ban is a breach of their emancipations.
Robert Jackson, a councilman, said: ‘We are moving towards a totalitarian society if in fact we’re going to have those kinds of restrictions.’
