Cancer cases rising in Africa

The World Health organization stated that cancer can be prevented to a great extent by creating awareness and spreading knowledge about cancer.

WHO regional director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo while giving out a message on the World Cancer Day stated that cancer was on rise in Africa.

Dr Sambo added that cancer epidemic could be controlled awareness was spread by governments and like organizations about detection of the disease and its timely treatment.

He said, “Good knowledge of cancer prevention will help to reduce contact with cancer-causing agents in the home and in the workplace; increase protection against harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV), foster healthy eating habits and regular physical activity and contribute to the prevention of infections.”

Most commonly found cancers like work-related cancers, prostate, cervix and uterus should be given special attention as more number of people are dying from them everyday and the rising cases need a check now.

Cost-effective interventions by international agencies and governments are needed to make individuals take timely treatment, he added. Early detection was another important aspect that could change the whole facet of the rising epidemic.
