Connection between Pandemrix and Narcolepsy Needs to More Study: WHO Panel

A recent statement by the panel of experts instated by the World Health Organization has stated that further more investigations were required regarding the drug Pandemrix. The panel is currently carrying out a review of the drug to determine, whether its use, results in people developing narcolepsy.

The panel was set up after a study carried out by researchers in Finland had indicated that drugs used in flu vaccines resulted in the development of narcolepsy. Though, the panel said that till now they have not been able to identify, whether the drugs resulted in anyone developing the sleeping disorder.

The report by the advisory panel has stated that if looked at from a global point of view, it seems that narcolepsy is not a result of influenza vaccines. The panel has further expressed confusion regarding the interpretation made by Finnish researchers in the study.

Though, WHO did point out that such disorders were not usually witnessed among teenagers in other countries, but, their prevalence was pretty distinguishable in countries like Sweden, Finland and Iceland. The data regarding the Finnish study was assessed by the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety. It needs to be noted that the research had claimed that children receiving a Pandemrix jab were nine times more likely to develop narcolepsy.
