Dairy Farmers Reel under Losses as South Korea Recovers from the Worst Outbreak

Dairy farmers in South Korea are currently suffering losses amounting to the wastage of 200 tons of milk a day. Apparently, the milk that is produced, is being poured away to minimize the spread of the dreaded foot and mouth disease in the country.

The outbreak has led to the nation facing two problems. The first one is regarding a shortage of milk, while the second one is the problem of space. Apparently, livestock that was slaughtered needs a place to be buried. It needs to be remembered that in order to decrease the spread of this disease, the authorities had to cull 3.2 million livestock.

In an announcement made by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, Korea had witnessed the worst outbreak of the Foot and Mouth disease. The nation has never been struck with such ferocity in the past five decades.

The culling of livestock like pigs, cattle, goats and deer has led to the government falling short by $1.7 billion in funds. It has also kicked off an immunization initiative for cattle to protect them against the virus.

The nation has witnessed a drop of milk supply by a massive 80%, with dairies facing a lot of problems because of a shortage in supply.
