The bosses at Honda have decided to challenge the compensation of $644,000 slammed on them after an aged mechanic working at their one of the unit contracted mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a lethal form of cancer, which has no treatments so far. Early diagnosis is nearly impossible in the people affected by mesothelioma, thereby ruling out the slightest chances of treating it.
Prolonged exposure of asbestos is the main cause for lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Keeping this in mind, government, now and then issues new guidelines urging everyone to stay away from it.
It is learnt that Hidenari Hane, aged 61, was diagnosed with this type of cancer in 2007. It was found that, he developed the strain after he was exposed to asbestos fibers for quite a long time, while working at Honda plant in Tokyo.
When the matter reached court, the Judge Koichiro Matsumoto observed that it is quite disappointing that one of the leading automobile manufacturers has failed to recognize the ill-effects that asbestos carries under its belt, despite the repeated warnings from governments across the globe.
The District Court judge also maintained that the company should be penalized for failing to take care of its employees.
Disagreeing with the judgment, the bosses at Honda said that they will appeal the case again.
