MUMBAI, Nov. 29 -- Indian officials said Saturday they have regained full control of Mumbia, 60 hours after waves of militants launched terror attacks that killed nearly
200.
Police declared the siege at Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel over, three days after attackers struck it, the nearby Trident-Oberoi Hotel and an expatriate Jewish community center among other targets, the BBC reported.
"All combat operations are over. All the terrorists have been killed," declared Mumbai police commissioner Hassan Gafoor outside the Taj Mahal hotel, where commandos began a new assault early Saturday aimed at cleaning out the remaining terrorists.
Commando chief J. K. Dutt told reporters that three militants had been killed at the Taj, but rooms remained to be searched. Dutt asked any guests still hiding in the building to come out, but warned that small explosions might be heard as the clearing operation continued.
Fighting at other flashpoints also seemed finished late Saturday, such as at the Oberoi hotel, where nearly 100 people were rescued and 24 bodies were found. All was also calm at Nariman House, the Mumbai base of an orthodox Jewish organization, where Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, 29, of Brooklyn, and his Israeli wife, Rivka, were among six hostages killed, The New York Times said.
