The second game of the Man vs. Machine "Jeopardy" competition, which was televised nationally on February 16, witnessed the IBM supercomputer Watson comfortably beating two ex-Jeopardy champions - Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.
Despite the fact that human champs somewhat redeemed themselves in the second game, after the first game's fiasco, they clearly were no match for Watson, who has now emerged as the best Jeopardy player.
Though Watson appeared very strong in the beginning, Jennings soon rallied and got enough momentum to take the lead away from the computer. As such, the end of the first round had Jennings leading the game with $8,600; compared to Watson's $4,800; and Rutter's $2,400. Jennings further continued to perform in Double Jeopardy, getting $17,000, as against Watson's $15,073.
However, Watson later found both Daily Doubles to catch up on Jennings; and ended the round up with a $5,240 lead over Jennings. After Final Jeopardy, which all the three participants answered correctly, the final score had Watson with $44,131; Jennings with $19,200; and Rutter with $11,200.
The competition was not even anywhere near a close one, with Watson finding both Daily Doubles and running away with $35,734, while Rutter had $10,400 and Jennings $4,800.
Eventually, the total score for the tournament cemented Watson's win with $77,147; Jennings with $24,000; and Rutter with $21,600.
As per the Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, the tournament has clearly shown that "Watson is fast, knows a lot of stuff, and can really dominate a match."
