According to IDG News Service, Verizon Wireless recently revealed in a statement that the users of the new Motorola Xoom tablet will have to send their devices to Motorola for a week so that they can be upgraded to 4G.

The Motorola Xoom, which landed on Verizon Wireless on Thursday, is the first tablet to run the Android 3.0 'Honeycomb' version of the Google operating system that has been optimized for tablets.

The Xoom currently works on Verizon's 3G network, and is available for $599.99 subsidized and $799.99 unsubsidized. The tablet's upgrade to 4G will not entail any extra cost for the users.

Even though Motorola had earlier said that the 4G upgrade for Xoom will happen in the second quarter, Verizon has recently stated that the upgrade will be available "shortly." The carrier has asked the Xoom users to sign up for receiving an e-mail notification when the upgrade is available.

To get the 4G upgrade, the Xoom users have been instructed to first back up all the data on the tablet, before sending it to Motorola. As per Verizon, the user may have to go without their devices for nearly six business days; thereby implying that the upgrade process will probably take a week or more, as six business days would also include a weekend.
