According to a recent report from Bloomberg's Mike Firn from Tokyo, Nintendo has released its 3DS portable console in Japan on Saturday; and software developers are struggling how to best make use of the three-dimensional graphics of the device.
The 3DS hand-held has debuted in Japan with eight 3D titles, including Capcom “Street Fighter Soccer.” One of the launch titles will be Nintendo’s sequel to its in-house dog-rearing game called “nintendogs + cats.”
By the time the 3DS launches in the US, on March 27, eighteen 3D games that will be available for the console. The 3DS games, slightly more expensive than most of their 2D counterparts, will cost nearly $40.
However, with many software developers are still wondering how to fully exploit the 3D gaming technology and incorporate 3D gameplay into their games, Yosuke Hayashi – the producer of Tecmo Koei Games’ upcoming 3DS fighting title “Dead or Alive Dimensions” – said that developers essentially need to “think of a completely new approach only possible with 3-D games.”
However, highlighting the uncertainty currently surrounding the 3D gaming scenario, Hayashi added: “If making games is like cooking, we haven't figured out if 3-D is a spice, or maybe a main ingredient.”
Nonetheless, talking about the potential attractions of incorporating 3D into games, Hirokazu Hamamura - president of Enterbrain, a Japan-based publisher of videogame magazines – noted that it will not only “make it easier to convey what is fun about the games”, but will also ramp up the intensity of the graphics.
