San Jose happens to be the home of about a hundred medical marijuana shops. The high numbers of such shops are still considered a nuisance, however the city hall has announced that it will be calling upon such shops on Monday to discuss a marijuana tax that might help the broke city to come out of its financial woes.
Medical marijuana centers in San Jose will have to shell out an additional 7% on the sales that they make from Tuesday onwards. The move has already received the support of public that had voted for the taxation of marijuana sale in November last year.
It needs to be kept in mind that San Jose is not the only urban establishment in the country that has looked at the idea of taxing marijuana centers.
It was only in November that Oakland and Berkeley had raised their taxes levied on Marijuana. Authorities in Berkley had asked a dispensary to pay an astounding $6.4 million last week as the drug was not exempted from sales tax.
Talking about the decision taken by the council, the Deputy City Manager of San Jose, Deanna Santana, said that the council believed that they were being underpaid. Though, marijuana centers have felt that the whole situation is extremely unreal.
