According to a report released by the Assembly of First Nations, it was revealed that food from traditional sources makes people of B. C. healthy. The people who consume food from traditional sources are likely to be healthier that those people who do not.
Reports suggest that fish, game and forage foods suffers from environmental contamination. The First Nations Food Nutrition and Environment study says that people who consume traditional diets are fast declining due to the above facts of fish and forage foodstuffs.
Donald Sharp, AFN director of environmental stewardship and lead investigator of this study stated that people who consume traditional foods are more healthy that the rest.
"We have always heard people talk about the food supply and contaminants, but we didn't really know, there were huge gaps in our knowledge", said Sharp. He also quoted that people are eating a combination of market food and traditional food, but the ratio is yet to be known.
The study is based on the report of 21 nations in B. C. randomly. This report is the first one to be released in the last 10 years. This project was worth $10-million. The financial funding was done by Health Canada. This project was undertaken by, the University of Northern British Columbia and Universite de Montreal.
