Alberta Health Services Faces Financial Crisis

Alberta Health Services are facing huge financial crisis. The budget of AHS is not adequate for the future capital budgets. Gord Bontje, former board member of AHS says that the $320 million a year will be required to run South Health Campus alone and despite this facility there are dozens of other facilities. He added that there is no possible way to run South Health Campus or any other facility unless there is some extra funding or closing of a facility.

Gord Bontje has resigned from NHS to oppose the departure of CEO Stephen Duckett. Former Alberta auditor general Fred Dunn has criticized the Alberta Health Services and the regional health authorities for failing to plan for the operating cost of new facilities.

The Health Minister, Gene Zwozdesky, says that they hope that AHS will find the money from the $500-million annual hikes to its $9-billion budget. The funding is promised to AHS each of the next four years. He added that the AHS will be provided with extra funding if required by them.

Gord Bontje has said that the AHS will be forced to mothball new hospital capacity unless it gets some extra financial help.
