Raising their concerns over the use of unsaturated fats in the food industry in Vietnam, the nutritionists have urged government to issue more stringent regulations and measures governing the practices.
Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Standard and Consumer Protection Association, Do Gia Phan believed that there was an urgent need to take a step in this direction.
Deputy Director of the Vietnam Cardiovascular Institute Nguyen Bach Yen explains that the Trans-fats (industrially-produced trans-fatty acids) are commonly found in popular junk food and industrially produced foods such as donuts, fried sausage, snacks and instant noodles and it was produced while cooking hydrogenated oil.
World Health Organization has issued a statement in which it has claimed that the consumption of Trans-fats increased the risk of coronary heart diseases and diabetes.
Though some products make sure to put the text of “trans fats–free” on the labels but mandatory standards to regulate the Trans-fat content are missing.
Referring to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) report, Phan said that Mc Donald's has eliminated Trans-fat in their products in Denmark, France, Russia and Argentina.
