According to recent study, the cholera outbreak in Haiti might prove to be a lot worse than previously estimated by the UN. It needs to be remembered that the United Nations had predicted about 400,000 cases of cholera in the country.
However, in complete contrast to the prediction by the UN body, it has been estimated that the numbers might double to the previous predictions. Researchers at the University of California and Harvard Medical School have predicted that there will be an estimated 779,000 cases of the possibly fatal disease between March and November this year.
The report has appeared in the publication known as the Lancet on the 16th of March. The findings of the new study are very crucial as estimates will help in the better allocation of resources to combat the increasing prevalence of the epidemic.
Talking about the situation in Haiti, a Medical Resident from UCSF, Dr. Sanjay Basu, said that the epidemic was here to stay and it is definitely not a short term outbreak. He further informed that the epidemic will only grow and will last for a longer time period than previously predicted.
It was last year that Haiti cam under the cholera clout after a devastating earthquake had left widespread devastation in the country.
