Hulu vanishes from TV.com and Boxee

It left the viewers totally perplexed first time when Hulu content vanished from TV.com on Tuesday, and second time on Wednesday, when Hulu announced that it will withdraw its content from Boxee on Friday.

Hulu, the website providing commercial-supported streaming videos of TV shows and movies from NBC, Fox and many other networks and studios, pulled its content from TV.com of CBS Corp., saying that it was “exercising” its “contractual rights”.

While CBS spokeswoman declined to comment on Hulu’s sudden withdrawal of its content from TV.com, Hulu spokeswoman declined to offer any explanation regarding their move. Hulu spokeswoman just said, "Hulu has contractual rights with regards to our relationship with TV.com and we are exercising those rights. Out of respect for their confidentiality, we will not disclose our discussions.”

Furthermore, Los Angeles, California based Hulu, which is joint venture of NBC Universal and News Corp., which publishes the Wall Street Journal, also declared that it will pull its content from the social viewing platform Boxee on Friday.

In a blog post, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar explicated, “Our content providers requested that we turn off access to our content via the Boxee product, and we are respecting their wishes. While we stubbornly believe in this brave new world of media convergence — bumps and all — we are also steadfast in our belief that the best way to achieve our ambitious, never-ending mission of making media easier for users is to work hand in hand with content owners. Without their content, none of what Hulu does would be possible, including providing you content via Hulu.com and our many distribution partner websites.”

In response, in a blog post, Boxee wrote, “Two weeks ago Hulu called and told us their content partners were asking them to remove Hulu from boxee. We tried (many times) to plead the case for keeping Hulu on boxee, but on Friday of this week, in good faith, we will be removing it.”

“We had generated 100,000 steams for Hulu last week and that it would continue negotiations with Hulu in hopes of restoring a relationship,” said the New York-based Boxee, which has provided access to Hulu, Netflix, ABC, CBS, MTV and more for free.
