A woman was arrested in a Sunrise supermarket as she was allegedly poisoning jars of baby food. Shirley Ybarra, 50, is charged with Poisoning Food or Water, a first-degree felony, as well as violation of probation and is in a South Florida jail.
Investigators said Publix surveillance cameras showed Ybarra wearing rubber gloves on her hands before mixing an acrid black substance in baby food and juice containers in the grocery aisle at a Publix Supermarket last week. In the presence of shoppers and employees, Ybarra worked on the jars and bottles for 15 minutes.
Ybarra had stored the dark liquid in a container of body splash and according to deputies it smelled like ammonia. Detectives said when confronted by store employees, Ybarra told them she was fixing food for her son. Investigators have said that Ybarra did not try to put the baby food back on the shelf.
The tampered food items have been sent to the Food & Drug Administration for testing. Deputies have also contacted other supermarkets in the area to check if Ybarra had been there.
Ybarra was originally committed to a hospital and currently is in jail.
