Nowadays, it seems like stem cell transplant is the solution of many critical diseases. The bone marrow of the patient is replaced by the stem cells. Stem cell transplant can cure from multiple sclerosis (MS) according to a new study.
The researchers in Greece are conducting this experiment on 35 patients who received experimental stem cell transplantation for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
In this experiment, the immune cells are damaged deliberately and then populated with healthy stem cells. The scientists hope that this would help the body to protect its nerve cells. MS cause the damage of the nerves and thus they cannot transmit signals for proper functioning of body.
The nerve damages can lead to troubles including vision, speech, weakness, coordination of movement and pain.
Statistical data from National Sclerosis Society claim that 400,000 Americans and 2.1 million world-wide people are suffering from this disease.
It has been found that after 11 years of the transplant the disease is now contained in them and has not spread further. MRI scans and other tests have found that the disease has not progressed.
Out of them only 10% patients are completely diseases free and 2 patients die of transplant-related complications.
