Scarcity of Condoms in Kenya

Kenya is facing scarcity of condoms after the Government of the country had stopped importing condoms from China. The import was discontinued following the complaints that they do not fit.

Kenya’s Citizen Television has filmed desperate Kenyans, washing condoms in order to use them again. Social networking site Twitter has expressed shock at the news.

Kenya has made an emergency order of 45 million condoms to the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief programme. The country will receive the condoms on 10 April. The last supply 19 million condoms lasted for around six weeks.

The Deputy Director of Kenyan National AIDS Control Programme, Peter Cherutich, said that the government has signed a long-term agreement with the United Nations Population Fund to supply 180 million condoms from May.

The country has a population of about 40 million. The Director of Public Health, Shahnaaz Sharif says that the demand of condoms was eight million per month then it went to 12 million and currently it is around 20 million.
