The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared that the chances of severe fracture is very less, in case of those ulcer patients, who take low dose of Proton-Pump Inhibitors (PPI) and for a shorter duration.
The authority said that patients who receive high dose of PPI for a longer period of time are at risk of facing serious hip, wrist and spine fractures. But if they use it for time being and that also in a very low quantity, then there will not be any complications.
As per some studies, the PPI drug is important for the ulcer patients, just because it suppresses the acid flow in the stomach. But at the same time, the medicine creates hindrance in calcium absorption. This makes the bone weaker and fragile. So the chances of breakage increase this way. But normally it has been noticed that patient who are taking his drug for more than one year, suffer from such problems.
The agency which is the producer of this drug, announced in the last year that, prolonged use of PPI, might lead to fracture and so patients and the physician both should be well aware about the fact. They are planning to place a new warning on the prescription for generating awareness.
