A recent survey conducted by the Williams Institute in the areas sexual orientation, gender identity-related law and public policy has unveiled that more than 8 million adults in the US are lesbian, gay, or bisexual. These people make 3.5% of the adult population of the country. There are also nearly 700,000 transgender individuals in the US.
The Williams Institute for Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy carry out its work through a variety of education programs and media to judges, legislators, lawyers, other policy makers, and the public.
The study claims that approximately 8 million Americans were identified as LGBT. The study has called the federal statistical agencies to move towards the LGBT community. Most of these people are unaware about their health status. LGBT teenagers have higher risks of depression, suicide and substance abuse than straight teens. Government should make efforts to understand and address the health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
The survey also unveiled that more women were found to be bisexual as compared to men. Nearly 19 million Americans were found to be engaged in same-sex sexual behavior and nearly 25.6 million Americans had same-sex sexual attraction.
