In a recent verdict, the federal drug regulators have rejected the Merck’s plea to approve the prescription of Gardasil to women between the ages of 27 and 45.
FDA had approved the use of this drug for the females between ages 9 to 26 in 2006 and the regulators ruled out the approval request in order to avoid HPV or human papillomavirus in older women which could further cause cervical cancer and genital warts.
Out rightly rejecting the Merck ad campaign promoting Gardasil, Dr. Diane Harper, a physician and medical scientist at Dartmouth Medical School said that the advertisement just wanted people to believe that the drug could save one from cervical cancer which is nothing but a sheer lie.
Raising serious questions related to the safety of the drug, she believes that giving this vaccine to 11-year-olds is a big health experiment.
At the same time, issuing a defending statement, Marty Soule said, “Immunization given early in life allows our immune system to prepare so that it can protect us from disease later in life”.
In a clinical trial, the National Vaccine Information Center made a detailed comparison between Gardasil and meningitis vaccine which is given to the same age group and it found that Gardasil had 30 times higher side effects with a record of prompting more than 5,000 emergency room visits.
