Carlton Hotel in Christchurch demolished

The historical Carlton Hotel in Christchurch, which was around 105 years old, was demolished on Saturday evening. The building was pulled down because of the February’s earthquake.

Publican James, Murdoch said that the building is located in a corner of Bealey Avenue, Papanui Road and Carlton Mill Road, which is very close to the damaged.  He said that he has expected it to be damaged in the earthquake. He added, "It's one of those things. You've got to get on with it''.

The Carlton Hotel has served the first beer on tab in 1939, and opened country’s new first beer garden in 1947 and they have also started the first drive-through bottle store in 1954.

However, the engineers said that the building was badly damaged and they were worried that in consequences of the earthquake the left building will also fell down. Engineers said that building needs attention otherwise it will damage completely within next one day; as the engineers are worried that it will fall across the road.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Carlton Hotel is hoping to reconstruct the building with in next one year. The hotel was built in 1906 and has been categorized in the historic places.
