Additional cut-and-bagged potato products from Northern Star Co., a subsidiary of food processor Michael Foods Inc., are being recalled from the U.S. market over fears that they may be contaminated with bacteria.

The items facing recall were the 20 ounce bags of Simply Potatoes-brand products, which included Southwestern Style Hash Browns, home-style slices and red potato wedges carrying "use by" dates on the packages ranging from March 29 to April 3, 2009.

According to company officials the voluntary recall was undertaken when laboratory testing indicated Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in a package of Simply Potatoes-brand Southwest-style hash browns. The company said it has not received reports of any illness or injuries related to consumption of the product.

On Sunday, Giant Food LLC said it had removed 20 ounce bags of Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns, Simply Potatoes Homestyle Slices and Simply Potatoes Red Potato Wedges from its shelves, which were also recalled by Northern Star.

Giant said customers who have purchased any of these items should discard any unused portions and bring the receipts to their stores for a full refund.
A bacteria that can cause flu-like symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, Listeria monocytogenes can be particularly or those with weakened immune systems.
