Pakistani foreign minister assures US on terrorism

Washington  - Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi on assured the United States that his country will work with Washington to fight terrorism.

Qureshi met Tuesday with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as part of a series of meetings this week in Washington, and as the United States is engaged in a strategic review of the situation in Afghanistan and cross border raids from Pakistan.

"Pakistan is willing to work with the American administration to fight extremism and terrorism," Qureshi said. "We are determined to defeat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations."

President Barack Obama is reviewing the conflict in Afghanistan and is seeking a comprehensive approach to deal with Taliban militants using Pakistani territory as refuge for carrying out attacks.

The Pakistani government has objected to US airstrikes along the border areas targeting the militants and al-Qaeda, but the attacks have continued. The United States has sought to reduce tension between Kabul and Islamabad and to encourage better cooperation.

Clinton will meet Thursday with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta and will also hold a three-way meeting with the two diplomats later this week. (dpa)
