Reese Witherspoon - Vince Vaughn holiday comedy 'Four Christmases', was gobbled up by the Thanksgiving weekend movie crowds, premiering at No. 1 with $31.7 million. Hollywood's second-biggest Thanksgiving period ever, in terms of revenue, the top 12-movies raked in $223.7-million over the week, only trailing the $232.2-million 2000-haul.
'Twilight,' No. 1 the previous weekend, took a steep 62% decline from its $69.6-million premiere, with Disney's animated 'Bolt' in second place, albeit with only a slight lead.
At No. 10 'Milk', starring Sean Penn as slain Supervisor Harvey Milk, set a box-office record at Castro Theatre, San Francisco, Focus grossing $109,440 and breaking the previous three-day record set by 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'.
New release 'Australia' starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman billed as an epic film on the scale of 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'Gone with the Wind' and 'Giant', proved to be a disappointment, opening at No. 5 with a weekend rake-in of $14.8-million, way below the expected $18 million. However, things could change as Fox officials point out, director and co-writer Baz Luhrmann's films, like 'Moulin Rouge' and 'Romeo and Juliet', started slow, but later built momentum.
The economy may be in the doldrums, but what could be a better time than now to forget reality and go catch a movie, Fox Searchlight's 'Slumdog Millionaire', a movie filmed in Mumbai, a city rocked by a three-day terrorist siege that killed over 150-people, may just make you dream again.
