Rising Feeding Cost Has Lead to Vanishing of Alabama Dairy Farms

Since last few decades, feeding cattle has become quite expensive in Morgan County and due to this, a number of dairy farms are vanishing throughout the state.

If we compare the number of present dairies to those existing Eleven years ago, then we’ll be really shocked to note the difference. Yes, at that time there were 10 commercial Grade-A dairies in Morgan County, whereas presently, we are left with only four today.

According to Guy Hall, who is the director of the dairy, pork and poultry divisions for the Alabama Farmers Federation it is the combination of high feed prices and low milk prices which has pushed some farmers out. He also said "Another reason is that children won't come back into the dairy business as farmers get older and retire".

In 1997, out of the 608 dairies in Alabama, 157 were commercialized, whereas in present times, only 65 commercial dairies are left out. There were times, when Abercrombie Dairy Farm was known as one among the four in Morgan County, but according to one of its owners no more family members are any more interested in continuing this dairy process. This has lead to a temporary halt to this.
