Organ Trafficking Prevalent in Pakistan

Organ trafficking is quiet prevalent in Pakistan and the Ministry of Health and Human Organ Transplant Authority has pushed it even further by refusing to act on the problem.

Recent surveys reveal that more than 450 cases of organ trade were reported only from the Punjab villages since March 2010. All of these cases occurred after the enactment of organ transplant law.

Police of the country has failed to curb the illegal practice. A large number of doctors of the country play a vital role in organ trafficking. A few years ago, Pakistan was the largest organ market which was visited by about 1,500 people around the world for kidney transplant. A single kidney cost the visitor between $10,000 and $20,000.

Most of the people involved in the organ trade are from poor families. Most of them are promised large amounts of money in return of their kidney but were paid less.

Experts believe that there is a need to impose pressure on the authorities for the implementation of the laws against the organ trade. Government officials and the Supreme Court must take action against the people who are openly violating the law.
