In a Historical Move, Vermont Passes Universal Health Care
Peter Shumlin

While, President Obama’s reform of the health care took a great time and energy, achieving little, Vermont has just shown how to revamp America’s corrupt medical system, state by state.

The Vermont Legislature, in Tuesday’s historic vote enabled legislation for a universal health care system.  After four hours of debate, in a 21 to 9 vote and a split along party lines, the state Senate approved the visionary plan for a single payer system.

Democrat Gov. Peter Shumlin, while campaigning had promised he would create a single payer system in Vermont, containing health care costs and giving all residents universal access to medical care.  He made good his promise Tuesday, marking the legislative victory by appearing on  MSNBC’s ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’, just five hours after the Senate vote.

In a statement to the Vermont press, Shulin said the Legislature had taken a big step today in making Vermont the first state in the nation to control the escalating costs of health care, including relieving small business owners from removing the burden of providing health care.  The newly legislated bill will not only benefit the residents of Vermont, but also its businesses.
