You will now be able to watch full episodes of selected CBS shows and other programs over WiFi or 3G mobile networks, if you are one of iPhone and iPod touch users. CBS Mobile has released its new TV.com app for iPhone and iPod touch users.
On Thursday, CBS Mobile released TV.com, a new free mobile application that offers iPhone and iPod touch users, free streaming video content from CBS including CBS News, Sports, and Radio, the CW, Showtime, and from CBS-owned Cnet and some other places.
Currently, TV.com dishes out selected CBS shows, which include CBS News and CBS Sports programs and episodes of "Late Show with David Letterman, "Star Trek: the Original Series," "CSI," and "The Young and the Restless," etc. The new TV.com app also fetches some nice picks from the CW, such as "Smallville" and "90210," and several shows from Showtime, such as "The L Word" and "The Tudors," and a nice selection of CNET and GameSpot broadcasts.
The new TV.com app will not only fetch clips, interviews, and promos, but also bring full episodes of some popular TV shows, such as "CSI: Miami".
Presently the selection of the programs and shows for the new TV.com app is limited, but CBS aims to add more programs and shows to the content library of TV.com.
The TV.com app offers a category list including News, Sports, Music, TV Shows, and Science & Technology categories to choose programs. In Music, it offers more refined search. It also offers a "Shake to Shuffle" feature that allows jiggling your iPhone with a randomly selected item. The app uses the iPhone's standard QuickTime player, and offers good quality video. According to the App Store, the TV.com app works on EDGE, 3G, and Wi-Fi.
With its new TV.com app, CBS aims to compete with the Viacom-backed Joost and Hulu, a joint effort between NBC and Fox. The move will now push others to release similar applications.
