An Indonesian national was charged with abandoning her newborn baby in Singapore today. The 27-year-old left the baby boy hidden in a rooftop garden at Block 31A Eunos Cresent car park. The Judges said that the mother did so with the intention of wholly abandoning the child.
In the course of the investigation, police found out that the women by the name of Indriani had illegally entered the country in or before February 2010 to work as a maid. She has quit the profession in the meantime.
Indriani is believed to have left the child in a flower bed around 3 pm on April 18. A pensioner that came up to the garden to smoke heard the baby’s screams. He searched between the plants for what he thought was a cat and found the baby covered in mud.
The women could now be jailed for seven years. Unlawful entry alone is punishable with 6 months in jail and a minimum of 3 strokes.
The woman was brought to a mental health institution, where psychiatrists will examine her to determine whether deteriorated mental health led her to abandon her child. Indriani will appear in court again on May 18 to receive the final verdict.
