The upsurge of renewable forms of energy in the UK has raised question over the effective output of the steps being taken by the Government to meet the green targets. As per reports, opinion is divided on the issue of construction of offshore wind farms between Ministers and experts on green policy.
Though there is consensus on the issue of planning renewable green power as a strategic tool to reduce greenhouse gas emission and further, to meet the EU targets, the coalition has proposed a massive expansion plan to build offshore wind farms, which is being opposed by the members of influential Committee on Climate Change.
Contrary to the proposal, the committee is of the view that Government’s plans for offshore wind farms are too expensive for the economy and further, asserted that Government should curtail number of offshore farms by three gigawatts to avert over-reliance on variable power of wind.
Chanting the need of becoming self-reliant on renewable source of energy, Lord Turner, Chairman of the committee claimed, “Renewable energy technologies are very promising and have an important role to play in helping to meet the UK’s carbon budgets and 2050 target, alongside other low-carbon technologies such as nuclear and carbon capture and storage”.
