A one day old baby boy who was kidnapped from the third floor maternity ward of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital was recovered within three hours from Santa Maria and brought back to safety.
The police began investigating after the hospital reported a portable baby alarm worn on an infant was activated. The hospital was locked down and the police after reviewing security tape footage from Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and using witness accounts tracked the baby to Leianna Arzate's home in Santa Maria on Friday. He was found unharmed a couple of hours after his abduction by the police and 33-year-old Arzate, was arrested at the scene.
According to Santa Barbara police Sgt. Charles McChesney he didn’t know if Arzate had a relation to the family of the 20-inch-tall, seven-pound baby named Julian. An ambulance was on scene to treat the child, but the baby appeared to be fine.
The baby’s mother was still recovering from the birth at the hospital when the abduction took place.
Surveillance footage showed Arzate get into a car and captured the license plate number. Authorities believe the woman carried the baby out in a bag. Hospital Chief Executive Ron Werft says the hospital has security systems designed to prevent abductions.
Police and hospital officials are investigating.
