Twilio closes institutional investment round; announces early customers for its Telephony AP

The first institutional investment round for Twilio - a dominant telephony API - has been closed. The company has refrained from disclosing the amount that it raised in the round, which was led by Founders Fund and Mitchell Kapor.

With the help of the Twilio service, developers can easily and quickly assimilate regular telephony functionality into their applications. Common actions - including placing calls or a recording play back can be integrated by the developers, with a small set of the most fundamental API commands.

Though it takes only a few coded lines to build basic projects, the service also provides enough leeway for the developers to craft more advanced applications.

With the additional funds, Twilio intends boosting its labors in sales and marketing, along with improving the infrastructure of the service, so as to provide better service corresponding to the escalating demand.

Together with its funding announcement, Twilio also announced some of its early customers - Cheetos, Earth911, and Tumblr. In fact, the Twilio service has been effectively used by Earth911, for reinstating the systems at the back of their 1-800-CLEANUP recycling hotline!

Undoubtedly, Twilio is taking off - what with a robust business model and a mounting customer base! Its customers already comprise the likes of Fortune 500 companies; and Sony Music, which uses Twilio for sponsoring some of its album releases.
