Nearly 2 Million Young People Living With HIV: Report

On Wednesday, a global report on HIV prevention was launched in Johannesburg. According to the report, approximately 2 million youngsters between the age of 10 and 19 are living with HIV across the globe. The report has also found that out of these 2 million young people. About 86% are from sub-Saharan Africa. In sub-Saharan Africa, the rate of HIV infection has jumped to 72% since 2009.

The report has also found that most of these 2 million infected people live in sub-Saharan Africa and are women. Majority of these women are not even aware of their status and these infected women make up more than 60% of all young people living with HIV. According to the report, people aged 15-24 years accounted for 41% of new infections in 2009.

The report has estimated that about 2,500 new cases of HIV infection are reported every year. UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake said that for most of the young people, HIV infection is the result of neglect, exclusion and violations. In some cases, it occurs with the knowledge of families, communities, social and political leaders.
