Health Department Bans Grasshopper Tacos at a Mexican Restaurant
Grasshopper Tacos

The Health Department has banned grasshopper tacos or any other insect-inspired dish at a Mission Street Mexican restaurant in San Francisco. The tacos were the specialty of the restaurant and were one of the most talked- about foods on the menu.

The restaurant has earned write-ups in local newspapers and even earned La Oaxaqueña Bakery and Restaurant the title of "Best New Mexican Hole-In-The-Wall” because of grasshopper tacos.

The Health Department said that though Persaud has a permit to import the grasshoppers, the place from where he purchases grasshoppers is not approved by FDA. In fact, there is no such place which is approved by the FDA for the selling of grasshoppers.

Owner of the restaurant, Harry Persaud said that it was surprising that the health department has ordered them to stop selling grasshopper tacos as they are sold on every street corner in Oaxaca.

Persaud said that the action is quiet disappointing for them as customers from Hawaii, New York and even from Canada order grasshopper tacos from them. They will have to settle for mundane foods such as steak and chicken. He is planning to work something out with the Health Department to re-start the sale of grasshopper tacos.
