Organic Sprouts Reason behind E. coli Outbreak

Sprouts from an organic farm are the reason behind the E. coli outbreak in Europe, claimed the health officials. Europe faces the threat of E. coli outbreak as 31 people have died and around 3,000 confirmed as sickened due to the disease.

A specialist team examined the different groups of people who were found in a poor health. The connection was observed as these sick people had been to 26 different restaurants and cafeterias which used the products of an organic farm.

President of the National Disease Control Centre Reinhard Burger blamed sprouts as the reason behind the outburst. He said, "It was possible to narrow down epidemiologically the cause of the outbreak of the illness to the consumption of sprouts".

According to Mr. Burger, the contaminated sprouts would either had been thrown away or consumed till date. But he is afraid that still sprouts can be a threat to the natives and people should avoid its consumption.

Christopher R. Braden, Director of Foodborne, Waterborne and Environmental Diseases at Centers for Disease Control stated that sprouts are very healthy for human body. "However sprouts are not a huge (crop) and yet we have seen quite a number of outbreaks in them. So I think there is more work that needs to be done in order to try and make sprouts safe", said he.
