Conveneer Raises $4.5 Million To Turn Cell Phones Into Servers

After having raised seed money from the founders and Teknoseed earlier on, the Swedish mobile startup Conveneer has lately raised $4.5 million in its venture round. The Swedish foundation Industrifonden led the round, which also included Broken Arrow Venture Capital.

Conveneer, which has offices in Lund, Sweden and California, is involved in structuring a mobile platform - Mikz - which will be capable of allocating a URL to your mobile phone, such that the content on your phone will become accessible on the Web.

Essentially, Mikz turns each mobile phone into a web server. Mikz can work out information - like users' contacts, ringtones, photos, music, GPS coordinates and other files. A URL on the phone creates a web interface - enabling other Web applications and services to ingest the data locked on the phone, and allowing the phone can take advantage of common Web APIs.

Conveener's technology, to be launched this year, boasts of two-way advantages both for carriers as well as handset companies - it augments their web portals with live dynamic services; and improves their diagnostics and support potential.

The company engaged in conversations with handset makers and mobile carriers for the insertion of the service in new phones. There is ample scope for carriers to strengthen mobile web offerings by giving clients their own mobile URL, and charge extra for the premium service!
