Nebraska Living Under the Threat of West Nile Virus

The threat of West Nile virus is haunting the scientists. It is believed that this mid-summer the virus will be at its peak. The Nebraska Health and Human Services System has revealed that the Dawson and Douglas counties in Nebraska are at higher risk as they have been tested positive of having the virus.

It has been reported that last year about 39 cases of West Nile were reported in Nebraska out of them two failed to survive. About 20 similar cases where reported at South Dakota but no death was registered. Person contracted with West Nile virus shows symptoms like fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back.

It is felt that people are not aware of the mosquitoes and therefore fails to take preventive precautions. The experts have told that there is a need to aware people about types of mosquitoes present in the atmosphere. There are two types of mosquito's floodwater mosquitoes and standing-water mosquitoes. However, the mosquito which is found on West Nile is Culex tarsalis.

The Culex tarsalis are mostly found on the flooded water and therefore are water mosquitoes. In order to make one area free from the mosquitoes, it is necessary to keep it clean and there should not be stagnated water around the area.
