Mount Gambire May Erupt Any Time

Bernie Joyce, Geologist University of Melbourne, presented his research in International Congress of Geodesy and Geophysics in Melbourne, that the eruption of volcano in Mount Gambire is overdue in South Australia. After the latest research, emergency services in Australia will be accessing the risk and probability of the volcano.

Joyce pointed out that the said volcano has the average history of erupting every two thousand years. The last known eruption was about five thousand years ago. The volcano has been overdue by more than three thousand years.

Although the size of volcano will be small as compared to Mount Vesuvius or Mount Pinatubo, the ashes and lava from eruption will be big enough to cause disturbance to the daily lifestyle of Australians. The damage that is expected the most is of causalities and infrastructure such as power, road and railways.

Auckland’s current disaster plan does cover eruption situation and evacuation process plans but they are not on any priority list which cover flood, cyclones and wood fires. Joyce suggested the Emergency Management of Australia to work with experts to prepare regional evacuation, prevention disaster plans in South Australia.

There is no current sign of volcanic eruption in Mount Gambire, but ignorance of the fact of its eruption will risk lives of people.
