A report compiled by the Michigan League for Human Services has revealed that the number of woman getting pregnant prior to marriage and during their adolescence has decreased significantly. According to the report, in Kalamazoo County, there have been 8% and 17% fall in the number of teenagers and unmarried women giving births respectively.
The report was compiled over the period of 10 years. During the 10 years’ rigorous study, it was found that Allegan County, St. Joseph County and Van Buren County witnessed a fall in the number of teenage mothers by 26%, 16% and 10% respectively. Although the number of teenage mothers dropped, the number of unmarried mothers rose in the Counties by 23% and 18%.
The rise in the number of unmarried women giving birth has caused concerns. The findings of the report highlight that there is a need to provide better health facilities to these mothers. Moreover, it is necessary to empower the masses about the importance of family planning.
It has been revealed that babies born to non-white communities are at higher risk of living in poverty. The report has also revealed that single mothers are often denied of child support which adds to their woes and leaves them to struggle financially.
