Shepherd Hospital in Longview Welcomes the Largest Newborn

According to reports, Janet Johnson has given birth to a baby boy, who weighs 16 pounds, which is above double of the average weight of a newborn, at the Shepherd Hospital in Longview. The baby is said to be the ‘largest newborn’ in the Lone Star State.

Also, she and her fiancé, Michael Brown, were aware that their baby was going to be big, and 2 weeks before her Caesarean delivery, Dr. John Kirk, her obstetrician, expressed he had anticipated the baby to weigh 12 to 13 pounds.

The mother and father being large people, is said to have contributed to the size of the baby, as well as Janet being diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Dr. Manuel Porto, a Professor and Chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at University of California at Irvine, said: "While infants of diabetic mothers are large in size, their organ function is not more developed and their lung development may be delayed. Early delivery can lead to respiratory problems for the newborn".

Hence, an uncommon genetic disorder can lead to babies becoming unusually large, though most of the time a heavy baby is as a result of diabetes in the mother.

Moreover, Dr. Ian Holzman, Chief of newborn medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, N. Y, stated, "A baby gets this large usually because a mother has poorly controlled diabetes and the baby is getting extra glucose calories during the pregnancy".
