Labor leaders in the Welsh Assembly are planning to ban smoking in the car when children are sitting inside. The main aim of the law would be to protect young people under the age of 18 from harmful second-hand smoke.
The Welsh Assembly is holding talks with the police chiefs on how to enforce the legislation. The proposal of the assembly is supported by the British Medical Association.
Welsh First Minister, Carwyn Jones said that the legislation will protect young children from the ill-effects of second-hand smoke. He further added that children are at a high risk of developing complications from second-hand smoke.
Dr. Mark Temple of British Medical Association said, “We know children are particularly susceptible to the damaging health effects of second-hand smoke. There is strong public support for such a ban with four out of five adults behind this move”.
If the new legislation would be implemented, Wales would become the first country in Europe to enforce such a ban. Under the new legislation, anyone found guilty of smoking inside the care will have to pay fine.
Tory MP David Davies said that the ban will keep a check on smokers and will also help in eliminating the problem.
