Impure Liquor Takes Life of 21 in Ecuador

Alcohol is injurious to health and becomes poison if it is adulterated. This was not a general statement, but a reality that has happened in Ecuador, where 21 people lost their lives after consuming impure liquor. Authorities took an immediate action, and banned the sale of alcohol in the community.

The incident occurred in Canton Urdaneta, which is 115 miles (185 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Quito.

According to Public Health Minister David Chiriboga, 103 people have been treated for consuming adulterated alcohol in the coastal municipality of Urdaneta in Los Rios province, and eight people were dead due to adulterated liquor.

Chiriboga said that, since Saturday, law has been activated, to not to sell or consume alcohol in the area. Whereas 28 containers each with 55 gallons of alcohol polluted with methanol have been seized, which is a toxic substance used to produce cheap liquor. The consumption of it leads to death.

Provincial health Inspector Jose Sanay informed that the symptoms of methyl alcohol have been found in the victims, like blindness, nausea. These symptoms have confirmed that victims have consumed adulterated alcohol.

He also announced that victim ingested alcohol on July 7 and they died over a week. The search for the alcohol manufacturer is still going on.
